Sofía Levín Group – Siempre Piazzolla

Sofía Levín Group

A voice, a piano, a bandoneon, a violin, a double bass: tango vibrating with contemporary resonances.

The Sofía Levín Group brings together five musicians with rich and singular artistic backgrounds, united by a shared desire: to carry and reveal a living, poetic and liberated tango, rooted in the Argentine tradition while resolutely turned toward the future. Through sensitive reinterpretations of the repertoire and contemporary tango compositions, the ensemble affirms a personal aesthetic, between heritage, invention and freedom.

The journey begins with the work of Astor Piazzolla — a founding figure of a new tango, at the crossroads of classical and popular music, lyricism and the avant-garde. Around this incandescent core revolve original compositions and works by contemporary composers inspired by Piazzolla, such as Ramiro Gallo and Javier González, with whom Sofía Levín maintains a rich and fruitful artistic partnership. Some pieces are sung in French, Spanish or Italian, weaving bridges between singular worlds. Between lyrical breath and urban poetry, these emblematic works reveal a tango that is at once literary, intimate and universal.

Trained at the National Conservatory of Buenos Aires, then at the ENM de Villeurbanne, the CRR de Gennevilliers, and certified in vocal technique by Richard Cross’s ERC, Sofía Levín has performed on stages across Europe and Latin America, including France Musique, the Sunset, the Musée de la Vie Romantique, the Alliance Française, Clásica y Moderna and Jazz Voyeur. Her voice, both gentle and intense, embodies a feminine vision of tango, deeply connected to the poetry of the text.

Alongside her, four kindred musicians shape a rich and nuanced collective sound. Philippe Zygel, a classically trained pianist turned jazz musician, brings a narrative and cosmopolitan dimension through influences ranging from Chopin to salsa. Lisandro Bazzana, an Argentine bandoneonist based in Paris and trained by Juanjo Mosalini, brings an expressive intensity forged between rock, tango and the work of Piazzolla. Joshua Desserre, a curious and eclectic double bassist, moves freely through the worlds of jazz, afrobeat and orchestral music. Cécile Mons, violinist, makes tango vibrate with an elegance that is both lyrical and contemporary, nourished by her experience in classical performance, chamber music and tango ensembles. Together, they weave an organic musical language, enriched by traditional echoes and a resolutely contemporary energy.

The arrangements are by Hugo Romero, Argentine composer, arranger and pedagogue, and a specialist in modern tango. A long-time collaborator of Daniel Binelli, former bandoneonist of Astor Piazzolla, he has distinguished himself on international stages through demanding and inspired reinterpretations of Piazzolla’s work.

Sofía Levín Group is tango of the present: elegant, free, hybrid and vibrant with all the musical and human stories that bring it to life.
