Sofía Levín Quartet – Siempre Piazzolla

Sofía Levín Quartet

One voice, four sensibilities, a tango vibrant with contemporary resonances.

The Sofía Levín Quartet brings together four musicians with rich and unique backgrounds, united by a shared desire: to carry and reveal a vibrant, poetic, and liberated tango, rooted in tradition yet resolutely focused on the future.

The journey takes its source in the work of Astor Piazzolla—a founding figure of a new tango, at the crossroads of classical and popular music, lyricism, and the avant-garde. Around this incandescent core gravitate original compositions and works by contemporary composers inspired by Piazzolla, such as those of Ramiro Gallo and Javier González, with whom Sofía Levín maintains a rich and fruitful artistic partnership. Some pieces are sung in French, Spanish, or Italian, building bridges between unique spaces. Between lyrical inspiration and urban poetry, these emblematic works reveal a tango that is at once literary, intimate, and universal.

Trained at the Buenos Aires National Conservatory, then at the ENM in Villeurbanne and the CRR in Gennevilliers, and certified in vocal technique by Richard Cross’s ERC, Sofía Levín has toured the stages of Europe and Latin America, including at France Musique, the Musée de la Vie Romantique, the Alliance Française, Clásica y Moderna, and Jazz Voyeur. Her voice, both soft and intense, embodies a feminine vision of tango, deeply connected to the poetry of the text.

Alongside her, three musicians craft a rich and nuanced collective sound. Philippe Zygel, a classically trained pianist converted to jazz, infuses a narrative and cosmopolitan dimension through his influences ranging from Chopin to salsa. Lisandro Bazzana, an Argentinian bandoneon player based in Paris, trained by Juanjo Mosalini, brings an expressive intensity forged between rock, tango, and the work of Piazzolla. Joshua Desserre, a curious and eclectic double bassist, freely traverses the worlds of jazz, Afrobeat, and orchestral music. Together, they weave an organic musical language, nourished by traditional echoes and a resolutely contemporary energy.

The arrangements are by Hugo Romero, an Argentinian composer, arranger, and teacher specializing in modern tango. A longtime collaborator of Daniel Binelli, former bandoneon player for Astor Piazzolla, he has distinguished himself on international stages with demanding and inspired reinterpretations of Piazzolla’s work.

The Sofía Levín Quartet is a tango of the present: elegant, free, blended, and vibrant with all the musical and human stories that animate it.
